POPSspot Sports Radio: The Disturbing Case of Joquan Wallace, Guests – Brenda Cherry & Creola Cotton

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

Popssssssssssss

Brenda Cherry's Change.org petition has already received over 100,000 signatures, but felony charges have yet to be dropped for Joquan Wallace, a student and accomplished athlete at Paris High School in Texas. Wallace received permission from his teacher to use the restroom, but ended up with a trip to the emergency room, two felony charges, and potential loss of sports scholarships. According to numerous witness, Wallace was the victim, not the perpetrator. What happened and what can be done?

POPSspot welcomes Brenda Cherry, President and Co-Founder of Concerned Citizens for Racial Equality, who is fighting to get the felony charges dropped and allow Joquan to graduate with his sister. Similar incidents and institutional racism are nothing new in Paris, Texas. We will also be joined by Creola Cotton, mother of ShaQuanda Cotton the 14 year-old who made national headlines in 2007 after shoving a hall monitor and receiving an initial prison sentence for 7 years. We will get an update on ShaQuanda's case and current status, and how we can support efforts to combat the school-to-prison pipeline.

Tissue In The Tape: Rhyme Madness Selection (Part 2)

Part 2 of our Rhyme Madness Selection Show 2014

Powered by the Hip-Hop maniacal stylings of Phil "Phillmatic" Wilson and Sivad Davis, the Tissue In TheTape podcast is the vehicle that will be used to drive home the point that Hip-Hop is 365.

The daily conservation of one of the world's most influential forms of expression is always the focal point and
mission of the preservation obsessed collective. The discussion of legendary exploits, creative exercises,
current events, past triumphs, historic low points, and epic failures can be found within each episode.
With those subjects in mind, the former college roommates are naturally inviting others into the
conversations that they have been having for 15+ years.

The concept of shoving tissue into the top of a cassette tape in order to transform a worn platform into
something hot and innovative identifies with how their brand of Hip-Hop reverence will be incorporated
into the audience's life.

Historians have never been so fresh... and what they've covered has certainly never been so dope.

To kick it off, RNO contributor and South American expert Andres Torres joins the show as we discuss the CONMEBOL (South American) and CONCACAF (North/Central American) region. In Segment 1 "The First Round", we give a quick overview of the six CONMEBOL teams (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia Ecuador and Uruguay), go over expectations, how they stack up in relation when looking at the rest of their respective groups and if there are any "Dark Horses". We wrap up the show with Segment 2 "Last Call", transitioning over to the CONCACAF region and looking at it in the same fashion, whether the conditions in Brazil help will be an advantage and if the region is underrated. As always you can let us know your thought by tweeting me directly @KamalHylton, leaving a comment underneath this post or on the Facebook Page and as of April 15th on the new War Room Sports Podcast Network. Also be sure to check out Issue 1 of PLASTIC PITCH and my article on Canadian National Team defender Dejan Jakovic's move to J-League side Shimizu S-Pulse and life in the Land of the Rising Sun.
